The Tigers replaced injured Magglio Ordonez on their roster for the American League Championship Series with Delmon Young, who was originally left off the roster while he dealt with a strained left oblique.
It was the second major injury in three days for the Tigers, who lost Young to the oblique injury on a swing in Game 5 of their AL Division Series win over the Yankees Thursday night. That injury was expected to keep him out for the entire series, if not the rest of the postseason. The fact that the Tigers returned him to the roster raised some hope that he might be able to at least pinch-hit in a game.
Ordonez was diagnosed on Sunday with a broken right ankle, a season-ending injury. He told Venezuelan journalist Alfredo Villasmil he suffered the injury during batting practice prior to Game 1 of the ALCS on Saturday and tried to play through it before leaving the game. Doctors examined him after that and found the fracture in the same area where he broke his ankle last year.
The Tigers were out of healthy position players who had still been playing somewhere to stay fresh for a possible postseason replacement. The one player who had, infielder Danny Worth, made the roster in Young's place prior to the ALCS, but Young was still eligible as an injury replacement.
By rule, teams are allowed to replace an injured player on their roster in the middle of a postseason series, but the player replaced is then ineligible for the next series should that team advance. The extent of Ordonez's injury makes that a moot point for the Tigers.

Carlos Guillen remains in Florida to work out in instructional league games while he recovers from a strained right calf he suffered in mid-September. The Tigers could be able to add him as a pinch-hitter for the World Series, should they advance, but he isn't ready yet.
Ryan Raburn played left field in Young's place on Saturday, while Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez moved up in the batting order to the third and fourth spots, respectively. How the Tigers fill right field in Ordonez's absence remains to be seen for Game 2 on Monday afternoon.
In the end, Young was the best option the Tigers had for replacing their injured right fielder. In fact, he was tentatively in the starting lineup for Monday's Game 2.
