In recent years, here have been murmurs about whether Porthcawl could be a fitting Open Championship host in the near future as Wales aggressively markets its golf product to a global audience. Course alterations have been made to the links in recent years, and the south coast's tourism infrastructure continues to improve.
With all the recent talk of Northern Ireland, you'd have to wonder who would be more fitting to be added to the rota: Royal Portrush or Royal Porthcawl. In my view, it's a dead heat.

I played it a few years back during one of my three tours in Wales, and it's a bunker-filled, narrow test of golf. It's a medal links worth including if you're up in the north part of the country playing Aberdovey and the spectacular, albeit quirky Nefyn & District.

Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle
All the elements that make the Ryder Cup so special were on display during Friday's morning matches at the Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle just outside Dublin. My first Solheim Cup experience has been a fun one.
The best part? All this excitement comes without the hassles of the massive crowds you see at the Ryder Cup. There were no traffic jams heading to the venue. You could watch as much golf as you wanted, almost from the front row.
And there was no problem moving from place to place to see the action. I always thought the Ryder Cup couldn't be beat for atmosphere – and it can't – but the Solheim Cup comes pretty close.
"It's unbelievable," said Bonnie Brandt, who traveled with 32 friends from Albuquerque, N.M. "I hear it gets rowdier and rowdier as we get into the weekend."
Solheim Cup crowds are smaller than the Ryder Cup, obviously, but they're no less into it. Everywhere you look, people are decked out in red-white-and-blue or European blue. Everything in Sharon Talarico's wardrobe showcased the American flag: her bejeweled hat, red jacket, blue sweater and colored scarf.
"I love the exuberance," said Talarico, who lives in Richmond, Va. "Golf is a little tame for me. The Solheim gives you a chance to cheer and wear bling. You are all allowed to display favoritism."
There are more women than men, too, by a wide margin. That's not a bad thing.

In 1971, the Greater Holyoke Chamber of Commerce established an ad hoc committee for the purpose of promoting Holyoke, Massachusetts, birthplace of volleyball, as the future home of the Volleyball Hall of Fame (VBHF).
In 1978, the committee incorporated as Holyoke Volleyball Hall of Fame, Inc., a nonprofit corporation established for the purpose of planning, promoting, establishing and maintaining a living memorial to the sport of volleyball.
William G. Morgan, inventor of volleyball at the Holyoke YMCA in 1895, was honored posthumously as first inductee of Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1985. Douglas Beal, coach of 1984 U.S. Men’s Gold Medal Olympic Volleyball Team, served as keynote speaker for induction ceremony.

Love wants to play on his Ryder Cup team
ATLANTA, Georgia - Davis Love knows he will be on the 2012 US Ryder Cup squad after being selected as the US captain last January, but he wants to play his way into the 12-man lineup as well.
The 47-year-old veteran of six Ryder Cup and six Presidents Cup squads also says Americans need to relax against Europe in the Ryder Cup the way they do against the Internationals in the Presidents Cup to be more successful.
But Love hopes to help make that happen from the inside. One year ahead of the qualifying cutoff for eight automatic berths, Love stands in the final playing spot based on points.
"I made 12 (Ryder and Presidents Cup) teams in a row and I've been frustrated ever since," Love said. "I want to make another Ryder Cup team. I'm hitting the ball well enough to play on the team. I just need to make a couple more putts.
"It would rank pretty high. I'm not going to make it when I'm 55 probably, so I need to go ahead and get it done."
Love, whose only major title came at the 1997 PGA Championship, knows the tension of the Ryder Cup quest and the more casual feeling US players have regarding the Presidents Cup and its non-European lineup.
"We putt better at the Presidents Cup than we do at the Ryder Cup," Love said. "We are the European team when we play the Presidents Cup. We are a little bit more relaxed and play more of our game.
"At the Ryder Cup, the American team, they try too hard.
"They want to win too bad. Presidents Cup we relax and play like the Europeans. They do it like one or two points better than us. It's not like a huge difference, and we need to figure out how to have a little bit more fun and relaxation on the course."
Leading America's bid to reclaim the trophy from Europe next year at Medinah has got Love picking out clothing and bag colors and working behind the scenes even as he tries to play his best and keep a watchful eye on young US talent.
"It's going to be pretty volatile because we have so many good young guys that will be bouncing around in the points list," Love said.
"It might be the Scott Stallings and Gary Woodlands and all those guys might knock my (Jim) Furyks and Stewart Cinks out. You don't know where we are going to be."

Crazy golf is a breeze for Oriol with borrowed clubs
PRAGUE - Unheralded Spaniard Pedro Oriol, using borrowed clubs after his were lost in transit, fired a five-under 67 to surge within one stroke of leader Peter Lawrie of Ireland after the Czech Open first round on Thursday.
"I'm not sure I'm going to switch back to my own clubs now even if they arrive," the 25-year-old Oriol told reporters.
"I was worried about my round because even though I practised very hard for the past two weeks my confidence has been quite low ... but then I go and shoot a 67 which just goes to show what a crazy game golf is."
Qualifying school graduate Oriol is in his first full year on the European Tour and has only made two cuts this season.
Last year's runner-up Lawrie profited from sodden conditions at the Prosper Golf Resort to attack the pins and rack up six birdies.
"The course is playing totally differently this year to last year. It's much softer," said the world number 138.
In a tie for second place with Oriol were Ireland's Damien McGrane and Frenchman Victor Dubuisson. A shot further back on 68 were Irishman Shane Lowry and Swede Mikael Lundberg.
World number 34 Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, the only player in the field ranked in the top 100, slumped to a 76.

Tiger 'a different player
Greg Norman doesn't think much of the way Tiger Woods plays golf these days, saying he would not have picked him to play in the Presidents Cup.
Norman, who in a recent magazine interview said he didn't think Woods will win another major, told the Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press that PGA champion Keegan Bradley would have been a more logical choice for U.S. captain Fred Couples.
Norman is the International team captain for the Presidents Cup, to be played Nov. 17-20 at Royal Melbourne.
"I can understand the name of a Tiger Woods and his history of what he's done on the golf course," Norman said. "But I pick the guys who I think are ready to get in there and play and have performed to the highest levels leading up to it."
Couples said a month before announcing his picks that one of them would be Woods, saying he was the "best player forever." Woods has not won in the past two years and has fallen out of the top 50 for the first time since he was a 20-year-old rookie in 1996. Couples also picked FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas.
He said Bradley would be added to the team if Steve Stricker's neck injury prevents him from playing.
Norman made his comments Saturday while promoting his Shark Shootout tournament at Tiburon Golf Club. Bradley is part of the 24-man field in the Shark Shootout, and Norman said he felt bad that the 25-year-old rookie was not part of the U.S. team.
"If I was in his shoes, I would feel like I got gut-checked a little bit," Norman said. "He's a young guy. He likes the Presidents Cup. He loves the idea of playing for his country, and he's not. So I feel for him."
Woods played for the first time in nearly two months at the Frys.com Open last week and tied for 30th.
"I just don't think he's swinging the golf club the way he used to when he won all those major championships," Norman said. "He's a different player out there nowadays. He even looks tied up. He looks more confined. I know what it takes to have freedom in a golf swing and I just don't think he's technically in the right position to do what he used to do."
His comments are sure to add some spice to the Presidents Cup, which the Americans have lost one only time -- in 1998 at Royal Melbourne. That year, Woods played Norman in singles and won on the 18th hole.

Syrian tanks occupy main Hama square
AMMAN, Jordon - Syrian tanks occupied the main Orontes Square in central Hama after heavy shelling of the city on Wednesday, residents said.
Tanks were seen thrusting to the center from the south, accompanied by an array of pro-government units, including militiamen known as "shabbiha", paratroopers and special forces, one of the residents told Reuters by satellite phone from Hama.
The square has been the venue of some of the largest demonstrations against President Bashar al-Assad's rule during a five-month protest movement.
The armed groups are still targeting private and public properties in addition to "terrorizing residents" of Hama, the official SANA news agency reported on Tuesday.
The news agency quoted an unnamed source as saying that the armed groups attacked the courthouse in Hama and other governmental buildings.
"They are also setting tires ablaze to create smoke to make it look like the army is pounding the city with artilleries," the source added.
Since the unrest began in mid March, Hama and Deir al-Zour have been the hot beds of the anti-government demonstrations, with thousands protesting every week to demand the downfall of the Syrian leadership.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met some US-based Syrian activists in Washington as the administration mulls more sanctions against the Syrian government.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters at a regular briefing that Clinton expressed her "admiration for the courage of the brave Syrian people who continue to defy the government's brutality in order to express their universal rights".
Toner added that she expressed her confidence in "the Syrian people's ability to chart a new course for Syria".
He said the US plans to "move forward with additional sanctions under existing authorities" and it is "exploring the scope" of the sanctions.
The administration has no inclination to use military force in Syria, a position underscored on Tuesday in Baghdad by the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen.
"There's no indication ... that we would get involved directly with respect to this," Mullen said.
The UN Security Council will continue closed-door consultations on Syria on Wednesday morning after unfruitful discussions on Tuesday, envoys said.
"The Security Council should send a positive signal in favor of political recommendations ending the violence ... unfortunately after yesterday's and today's discussions, no final agreement was possible among Security Council members today," Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters.
The situation in Syria is unlikely to have much impact on the overall Middle East region, said Gong Shaopeng, a professor of international politics at China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing.
Some 200 members of Syria's ruling Baath party resigned in April over the crackdown against demonstrators, but the majority remained firm. "This is the primary factor keeping Assad's government in place," Gong said.
Gong added that there is no one in the military speaking out against him, and the Christians and the Sunnis, who form the majority of Syrian society, have not united against Assad.
"So the government in Syria is still stable, which is different from Libya," Gong said.

Last Chinese woman falls at the Open
BEIJING - Feel some pity, if you can, for the home crowd fans at the China Open.
After local favorite Li Na and world No 15 Peng Shuai suffered quick exits in the first round, Zheng Jie, the only Chinese player left in the women's singles, was downed by 11th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, of Poland, in straight sets on Wednesday.
"We really wanted to put up a good performance on our home court and entertain the fans; we have tried our best," said two-time Grand Slam semifinalist Zheng after losing 6-1, 6-4. "However, it has come to the end of the season and we are pretty tired. Also, playing in front of the home crowd puts extra pressure on us. I hope we can do better next year," she said.
Meanwhile, Radwanska, who turned professional in 2005, said she is used to the Chinese fans and enjoys playing here.
"Well, I know that everybody was against me; I could hear that," she said with a smile. "It's always tough.
"But I was very prepared for that. Of course, they were supporting the Chinese player. I understand that.
"I always enjoy playing here. The fans are good, even when against me. I would like to thank them and just hope I will see that many of them at my next match," said the runner-up of the event in 2009.
Zheng was the only Chinese women's player to advance to the second round. Local favorite Li lost her opener against qualifier Romanian Monia Niculescu in straight sets while world No 15 Peng was upset by Italian Flavia Pennetta. Rookies
This is no slight to the golfers; it has more to do with how the developmental-level “mini tours” — the ones pro golfers play before they get to the PGA level — have changed over the years. Now in almost every aspect they mimic the PGA Tour. So we already know what it feels like to travel to a new city every week, play Pro-Ams, and then grind it out in a tournament Thursday through Sunday.
I can admit that there have been some huge advances in equipment over the last few decades that in turn have helped players achieve some amazing feats. The evolution of the driver and the golf ball are two of the biggest changes. We grew up with this new technology, so we haven’t been forced to change years of habits and make a big equipment switch.
Unlike several decades ago, rookies arrive to the PGA Tour with a supporting cast of sports psychologists, swing coaches, and other people working behind the scenes. We’ve had this network of psychological and emotional support in place for years and we know these people are as important to our games as our golf skills.
Don’t get me wrong. I love seeing Tiger and other PGA veterans do amazing things on the course. They have the kind of experience that I just can’t have at 26 years old. Still, in more ways than one I think rookies have made for a more exciting year on tour. You can’t count on any one player winning. But when a young rookie does win, you can pretty much count on a seeing dramatic finish

"There's nothing better than holding the Claret Jug at St Andrews. Hopefully at the end of the week it's just a different trophy," Oosthuizen said.
Also in contention at one shot behind the early leaders is Graeme McDowell, who seemed to return to form after a difficult season so far. The 32 year-old has recently returned to his previous coach Clive Tucker, in an attempt to bring his game back to the standard it was at in 2010.
"It was a bit of soul-searching and Clive was the answer, a guy that understands my game very well and was probably a lot to answer for why I played well in 2010," McDowell explained.
"I'm not breaking my ties with Pete (Cowen), I still want him to coach me but I needed another opinion on things."
Meanwhile Lee Westwood started the championship well with an opening round of 68, to sit beside Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington, defending champion Martin Kaymer and others at joint 11th. They are one shot ahead of Luke Donald, and Rory McIlroy finished the day at two under.
